Does a Collision Repair Show Up on Carfax?

Sometimes. Here is what feeds a vehicle history report, why a small repair you pay for yourself often leaves no record, and why nobody can promise you either way.

The honest answer

Sometimes. Not every time, and not automatically. Anyone who promises your repair will never show up is guessing.

The better question is what puts it there.

What feeds a history report

Carfax and AutoCheck do not watch your driveway. They collect records that already exist, such as:

  • Police crash reports. If an officer works the crash, there is a report.
  • Insurance claims. Many insurance companies report claims. Assume yours does.
  • Title records. A salvage or rebuilt title is a state record, and it stays with the car.
  • Shops and dealers. Some report the repair and service work they do.

What that means for a small repair

A parking lot scrape with no police report and no insurance claim, paid for by you, often leaves no record at all. A crash with a police report and an open claim is much more likely to show up, no matter who fixes the car.

That is one reason people pay for small repairs themselves. If the repair costs close to your deductible anyway, a claim may not be worth it. Get a price first and decide from there.

What the report actually says

Most entries are short. "Accident reported," a date, and maybe "damage to front." There is usually no parts list and no photos. A good repair and a bad one can produce the same line.

So keep your repair invoice. If you sell the car later, it answers the question before a buyer asks it.

What to do

If you just had the crash. Get the report number if police came. Take photos. Then decide who is paying, and pick your shop. Texas Insurance Code 1952.301 lets you choose.

If you are about to sell. Pull your own report first so nothing surprises you.

If you are buying. Ask for the repair invoice behind any accident entry.
