5 Costly Mistakes People Make After a Car Accident

Most of the money lost after a fender bender is lost in the first week, before anybody touches the car. Here are five mistakes we see and how to avoid them.

Sick of Collision Team

The expensive part happens early

The decisions that cost people money are usually made before the car gets to a shop. They get made on the side of the road, by somebody trying to do the right thing with bad information.

None of these are dumb mistakes. All of them are avoidable.

Mistake 1: Letting somebody else pick the shop

Texas Insurance Code 1952.301 says you choose the shop. Not your insurance company, and not the other driver's.

In practice it sounds softer. A claims rep says "we can get you into one of our shops." A suggestion is allowed. You do not have to take it.

Mistake 2: Treating the first estimate as final

The first estimate is written from the outside of the car. Sometimes a broken clip, bracket, or absorber turns up once a part comes off. The extra goes to the insurance company as a supplement. That is normal. It means somebody looked.

Mistake 3: Saying too much, too early

You will talk to at least one adjuster, maybe within an hour of the crash.

Give the facts. Where, when, what got hit, whether anyone is hurt, and the crash report number if you have it.

Do not guess at fault or speed. Do not say "I'm fine" before you know. Do not call the damage "just cosmetic" before a shop has looked at it. If the other driver's insurance asks for a recorded statement, you can say you will call back.

Mistake 4: Assuming you owe a deductible

You might not.

If the crash was not your fault and the other driver's insurance is paying, you do not pay a deductible. Their insurance pays for the repair.

If you use your own collision coverage, which can be faster when fault is still being argued, you pay your deductible and your insurance company goes after the other side. If they collect, you generally get your deductible back in the same share.

On rates, the straight version: not-at-fault claims usually do not touch your rate, and at-fault claims usually do. That is your insurance company's call, not ours.

Mistake 5: Letting a scratch sit

A scratch down to bare metal on a steel panel will rust once it gets wet, and rust spreads under the paint around it. A small scratch fixed now costs less than a rusted panel fixed later.
